Inma Boys
24 March to 1 May
Come Out and Carclew Youth Arts
The Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands (APY Lands) in remote north-west of South Australia are one of the worlds most harshest and unforgiving environments, encompassing over 103,000 square kilometres of desert country and houses ten communities and homelands with a population of over 3,000 people.
At a very young age, Anangu children across the APY Lands are taught their ancient culture through the Tjukurrpa or the Dreaming. This knowledge is passed on through their grandparents, parents, aunties, uncles and extended family.
Only Anangu people or direct custodians can re-tell orally, visually and perform the Tjukurrpa story and this is expressed through Inma or ceremony. Through performing Inma, Anangu children have a very strong sense of belonging to their country, and by their connection to people, place and to the ancient spiritual world.
