Putsch examines White definitions and expectations placed upon Aboriginal artists and aims to redefine these ‘rules’ and create a new vision which is dictated by the artists on their own terms.
 
“The worst type of censorship is not from the Police, the Government Bureaucrats, the Censorship Board, the Church or the Community; it comes from within. We won’t sensor ourselves.” Gordon Hookey, 2009.
 
proppaNOW are provocative, challenging, mischievous Aboriginal agitators, who challenge people through thoughtful confrontation and by offering new perspectives on how we, as a society, define ‘Aboriginal’ art. Putsch is also visually challenging, with large scale works including painting, sculpture, installation, printmaking, photography and video installation.
 
This exhibition will see proppaNOW exhibit outside of Queensland for the first time in its current form. All accomplished in their own right, the artists work looks to overthrow mainstream misconceptions, regarding institutionalised racism, stereotypes, urban myths and romanticised views of Colonial Australia.
