Arne-areye - All the Plants

02/05/2008

Irrkerlantye Arts

Irrkerlantye Arts is a vibrant community art centre situated on the banks of the Todd River in the heart of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. It provides Central and Eastern Arrernte families living in Alice Springs, Amoonguna and surrounding outstations; at Williams Well, Mt Undoolya and Kwementyeye Bore with a place to meet and embrace their culture and celebrate their country through the arts.

Arne areye - All the Plants is a joyful exhibition of paintings from the Irrkerlantye artists which celebrates the Arrernte plant world of Central Australia. The unique collection of paintings feature richly coloured interpretations of the diverse plant life of the Arrernte landscape, highlighting the diversity and productivity of the land and the important roles bush foods and medicines play in everyday Arrernte life. Furthermore, the works indicate that the experience of plant gathering and being amongst family and kin on custodial lands is a part of life that the artists know and enjoy.

This exhibition also provides a fine demonstration of the extraordinary depth of knowledge of bush foods and bush medicines held by the Irrkerlantye artists. Over 30 different plant species are represented in the paintings which exude a strong connection to land and culture and the shared respects between the artists and their country.
