Indigenous Artists of Australia

12 December 2008 - 1 February 2009

Queensland Arts Council

Indigenous exhibition exploring dance and culture

Take a glimpse into the mesmerizing culture of Indigenous dance and music when Queensland Arts Council’s Ontour onexhibition tours Indigenous Artists of Australia to Tandanya from December 2008 to February 2009.

Curated by Silvana van Dijk, former director of Culturebank Productions, Indigenous Artists of Australia gives an intimate and rare insight into contemporary Australian Indigenous culture and multiculturalism in action.

van Dijk said the exhibition is a portrayal of confidence, beauty and aesthetic understanding celebrating the achievements of Indigenous artists at the highest level.

“The exhibition is an example to all artists that to reach your dreams, you must be willing to work hard, learn and see the inner beauty in others and life.

I have created the exhibition as an escape for the viewer, a way for the viewer to immerse themselves in beauty and discover a renewed source of strength and hope for the future,” van Dijk said.

In the mid 90s, Culturebank created a platform for upcoming Indigenous musicians, singers and dancers, and youth at risk to explore the possibilities for an International Arts career.

Having toured with Queensland Arts Council throughout 2007, Indigenous Artists of Australia has enchanted viewers across the state and given them a deeper perspective into the culture of Indigenous Australians.

Queensland Arts Council provides access to the arts for regional and remote Queensland communities through innovative and affordable exhibitions, performances, workshops, masterclasses and arts related services.

This exhibition is a portrayal of confidence, beauty and aesthetic understanding celebrating the achievements of Indigenous artists at the highest level. The rich wildlife and nature photography, combined with montage, invokes an intimate experience of the landscape, culture and totems of the Nunukul and Yuggera people of the east coast of Australia.

In the mid 90s Culturebank productions created a platform for upcoming Indigenous musicians, singers and dancers, plus youth at risk, willing to explore the possibilities for a career in the Arts on an international level.
